Artificial Intelligence evaluation of Myasthenia Gravis symptoms from smartphone acquired data: a cross-sectional study (SMART-MG)
Research summary
The study plans to invite individuals with Myasthenia Gravis (MG) from several clinics in England, as well as healthy controls without MG, to visit a research facility. Participants will be asked to provide video and audio recordings using a smartphone device while they complete four standardized assessments. These assessments aim to identify speech problems (dysarthria and dysphonia), arm fatigue/weakness, and droopy eyelids (ptosis). Participants with MG will also complete several standard questionnaire-based MG assessments. The research team aims to investigate the feasibility of reliably differentiating between individuals with MG and those without, solely based on smartphone measurements. They will also explore whether computational algorithms applied to these recordings can accurately measure the severity of these symptoms automatically. If successful, this approach could enable patients to monitor their symptoms more effectively outside of clinical settings using a smartphone device. It may also facilitate earlier intervention and optimization of treatment by healthcare providers
