A prospective cross-sectional multi-centre study to assess the diagnostic accuracy of a panel of bacterial gene markers (M3) for colorectal advanced neoplasia (M3-PRO)
Research summary
The NHS bowel cancer screening check is offered to everyone over the age of 50. This is a home test kit, called a faecal immunochemical test (FIT). It is used to collect a small sample of stool (poo) which is sent to a lab to be checked for tiny amounts of blood. Your GP may also order a FIT if you have had a change in bowel habits or are experiencing abdominal (tummy) pain. In this study we will be comparing the FIT with a new test ‘M3’, designed by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, which detects increases in certain bacteria found in the gut. Previous studies have shown that an increase in these bacteria can be linked with the presence of a colorectal cancer. By comparing the results of each test, we can determine if the M3 test is better at detection of colorectal polyps or cancer.
