Road Accident In-Depth Studies (RAIDS) - No recruitment database
Research summary
RAIDS is an depth investigation study which provides a unique source of data on road accident causation and consequences, contributing vital evidence to underpin the development and implementation of countermeasures to reduce risk and mitigate injuries. Two main methods of data collection will be employed, on-scene and retrospective examinations. In broad terms, the main objective of the on-scene investigations is to develop information on vehicle primary safety, advanced safety features such as ESC (Electronic Stability Control), the protection offered by vehicles to other road users, road user behaviour information such as speed choice, impairment and causation factors and information on the influence of roads and highways design such as layout, surface condition and signage. However, in combination with the medical information collected from Coroners and Hospitals it can also contribute to information on injury causation, crashworthiness and occupant protection. The retrospective investigations, in combination with the collection of medical data, will primarily be concerned with collecting information on injury causation, crashworthiness and occupant protection. For inspections of passenger cars this will concern only the occupant(s) of the car. For heavy vehicles this will also include the protection offered to other road users. Information from questionnaires sent to accident involved persons will be used to support all aspects of the study.
