The Oxford Vascular Study: a population-based study of the incidence and outcome of stroke, transient ischaemic attack, acute coronary syndromes and peripheral vascular events (OXVASC)

Research summary

The OXVASC study is a community-based study of all acute vascular events occuring in a population of approximately 91,000 people registered with 9 GP practices (approximately 70 GPs) in Oxfordshire. The study acsertains and recruits patients admitted to local hospitals following transient ischaemic attacks, strokes, acute coronary syndromes and acute peripheral vascular disease events. Patients recruited undergo a detailed interview and collection of blood samples and regular follow up. The study also provides an emergency referral clinic for patients with possible TIA or minor stroke. The aim of the clinic is to determine the effect of more rapid investigation and treatment in the prevention of early recurrence.
