World Hip Trauma Evaluation (WHiTE) Platform – a framework for clinical trials for fragility hip fracture in those aged 60 and over
Research summary
Hip fracture is one of the biggest challenges facing patients and healthcare systems. Worldwide there are 1.3 million hip fractures with more than 70,000 hip fractures in the UK every year. These figures are projected to rise to more than 6 million by 2050 worldwide.People suffering hip fracture have a 30-day mortality of 7%, a 1-year mortality of 25% and experience a permanent reduction in their health-related quality-of-life similar to that of a patient with Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis. The WHiTE platform is a framework designed to efficiently deliver multiple randomised comparisons of interventions for patients aged 60 years and over with a hip fracture. It is based upon experience derived from the planning and delivery of a related group of randomised trials of interventions for hip fracture. The purpose of the platform is to simplify the patient pathway through research in this field and capture efficiencies in the reduction of documents and clinical reporting forms duplication. As new research questions arise, randomised comparisons will be added to the platform.
