Oxford and Reading cognitive health after recovery from acute illness and delirium-prospective study (ORCHARD-PS)
Research summary
This is an observational cohort study in which data will be acquired both prospectively and retrospectively. No intervention is involved. Patients will be recruited from the acute care wards and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) at the OUHFT and RBHFT and recruitment will be restricted to those patients who were communitydwelling prior to index admission. Patients will be consented for access to their medical records (secondary and primary care) as well as for study interview (study questions about health and functional status, residence, social environment and care needs.) and clinical procedures (blood sampling, CT brain imaging, clinical and cognitive assessment). Participants will undergo enhanced in-patient and cognitive assessment together with blood sampling for biomarkers. These assessments will take approximately one hour to do but participants may take a break if they wish to do so. CT imaging will only be performed if a CT scan has not been done as part of their clinical care during admission and once in the CT scanner, the imaging will take under 10 minutes to complete.
