The National Young Stroke Study (NYSS)

Research summary

This proposed study is a prospective cohort study of young adult patients (18-54 years) with ischaemic stroke or intracerebral haemorrhage in England. Study participants will be recruited through the established 15 NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN). CRN employed research nurses together with the clinical team at each participating centre will screen, identify and complete a questionnaire to collect information on history of traditional and emerging risk factors with eligible patients and also to collect investigation results related to the stroke from their medical records. The questionnaire can be completed face-to-face during the patients' original hospital stay or over the phone if they are discharged. No additional study visit is required. Informed consent or consultee declaration in those who lack capacity will be sought. A CAG application is already approved and we have CAG support to recruit patients where consent is not possible. Follow-up will be done administratively via data linkage with NHS England Central electronic health records (mortality/Hospital Episode Statistics) for up to 30 years. We describe the Research question and the study objectives below.
